SEZ Khorgos- Eastern Gate sees potential in cooperation with Liepaja SEZ
24 july, 2017
July 21, representatives of the Special Economic Zone Khorgos - Eastern Gate (Kazakhstan) were visiting the Liepaja SEZ, in order to become acquainted with Liepaja SEZ basic principles of operation, relief system and companies. At the same time possibilities of creating transport and logistics centers in the territory of the Liepaja SEZ, as well as possibilities of using Liepaja port terminal services were evaluated. As in the end of the visit acknowledged Zaslan Nurtazin, Head of Investment Division of SEZ Khorgos - Eastern Gate – we are SEZ Khorgos - Eastern Gate and we position ourselves as transport and logistics corridor from China to Europe, as well as other Central Asia, Russia or Kazakhstan goods export to Europe, but Liepaja in our eyes is Western gates to Northern and Western Europe. Delegation of the Special Economic Zone Khorgos - Eastern Gate visited biggest port and manufacturing companies, including iCotton, which produces cotton wool discs, wet wipes and other hygiene products.
From the strategic point of view, Special Economic Zone Khorgos – Eastern Gate in the transport industry can be compared with the Suez Canal Construction. Khorgos dry-port is a project in the Kazakhstan, where containers from China railway are reloaded on 1520 mm rail gauge wagons and further sent to Europe. It is a strategic object, which allows to change cargo flow from sea transport to land transport – road transport and railway. Work on multi-line highway from Almaty to Khorgos is also proceeded.
Zaslan Nurtazin, Head of Investment Division of SEZ Khorgos - Eastern Gate: “Your representatives visited us and saw how our SEZ is operated and this is a reply visit. We have ideas and intentions. We will proceed our work on specific projects, which we could implement together in future. In each of cooperation projects it is important to have good personal relationships. We have established close contact with the Liepaja SEZ management, we have similar vision and understanding, and the most important thing – trust. Business is based on mutual understanding and trust. I think it will give good results.”
Uldis Hmielevskis, Deputy CEO of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone: “Government of Kazakhstan has given a task for SEZ Khorgos – Eastern Gate with aim to redirect cargoes from sea transport to land transport, which means that cargoes from China should flow through Kazakhstan. Our aim is to take part in this transport flow and that is the reason why representatives of Khorgos are here, in Liepaja, to see the possibilities of making logistic centers in the territory of the port, as well as to get introduced with services offered by Liepaja port companies. We have seen how cargo handling is done in Khorgos and now representatives of Khorgos have seen how it is done in Liepaja and we will proceed our work on implementing specific projects to create and activate the cargo flow. The aim of Liepaja SEZ and Port of Liepaja is to integrate in this transport and logistics corridor.”
We would like to remind that from July 10 until July 14 (2017), Janis Lapins, General Manager of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone and Uldis Hmielevskis, Deputy CEO of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone met and agreed on cooperation with management of a unique project – Special Economic Zone Khorgos – Eastern Gate, which is in Kazakhstan, near the border of China.
