07 december, 2017
Before end of the year, Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority plans to announce procurement procedure for the Liepaja Yacht port construction project in full volume, in order to start construction works in spring, when the construction season starts. In 2017, yachting season was similar to previous years and the Port of Liepaja was visited by 327 yachts.
Karlis Kints, Manager of the Liepaja Yacht port confirms that in recent years the number of yachts is similar, “but dominating regions are changing, for example in 2016, there were more yachts from Scandinavia, but this year yachts from Poland, Lithuania were dominating. There were also yachts with flags of France, Italy, USA, Sweden and other countries. Especially we can point out a yacht from Australia.”
In the season of 2017, a special event happened on July 28, when four sailing boats made a stop in Liepaja during their way to the Klaipeda sailing boat regatta. Sailing boat crews saw the city (129 people) and were pleased with what they saw and promised to visit Liepaja again in the next year. As Kaspars Ponemeckis, Head of Safety, Security and Environmental Protection Department of the LSEZ Authority explained, we are working on attraction of sailing boats to Liepaja in following years, so that our port would be included in their route. In order to attract more sailing boats to the Liepaja Yacht port, already now there is a special discount rate to those sailing boats, whose purpose of travel is charity or training.
Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority took over the Liepaja yacht port in May, 2015, with intention to improve services and to develop the Yacht port, as well as to atract more yachts that are sailing in the Baltic Sea during the season and to improve the infrastructure.
In 2017, investment project with aim to modernize the Liepaja Yacht port, which goes under INTERREG programm “Better Harbours Network”, was continued. Funding from the INTERREG programm – 450 thous. euro – was received. Due term of the implementation of the project is the end of year 2018. Within the framework of the project, construction of a new building for the yacht center office and showers, WC and laundry room will be done, as well as reconstruction and equipping of berths No 80; 81 and purchase and installation of new floating berths (pontoons).
